[the Sound Of]
The sounds that surround us are often a subtle yet profound part of our lives, yet they remain an undervalued form of cultural heritage. Many of these sounds like the call of street vendors, clicking of typewriters, and the hissing of tape cassettes are either disappearing or have vanished. As technology progresses towards ‘efficient’, “noise-less” formats, our sonic environments become increasingly homogenized, causing rich auditory cultures to vanish without record. Archiving these sounds offers a crucial opportunity for cultural preservation, ensuring that these auditory heritages are not lost.

‘(THE SOUND OF)’ is an open sound archive dedicated to preserving the domestic soundscapes of everyday life before they disappear. Though ultimately global in scope, the project commences from a personal lens - archiving the familiar sounds of everyday life in India: pressure cookers hissing, ceiling fans clicking, street vendors singing, and pooja (ritual) chants. Over time, the archive will expand globally to document the sounds of homes worldwide including domestic interiors, shared spaces and streets, capturing sounds that shape cultural memory.
